Potential Challenges

This are a list of just some potential actions you could take to challenge white supremacy. Choose one from below or come up with your own!

  • Count the number of artworks by white artists you own. Calculate roughly how much money you spent on them all.

  • If you own art books, look through them and see how many feature the work of white artists on the cover

  • Donate to a local arts organization whose board and staff are NOT majority white

  • Buy a work of art from a local artist who you have not supported before who is not white

  • Sign up to donate monthly to the patreon (or equivalent) of a local artist who is not white

  • Attend an REI Groundwater training or another trusted racial equity training.

  • Research the painting "Open Casket" by Dana Schultz to find out why it was protested against. Research the topic of cultural appropriation further and discuss what you learned with a friend.

  • Research a local organization that is doing work to dismantle white supremacy. Reach out to volunteer with them. Follow through.

  • Research "Rachel Dolezal" and research the topic of cultural appropriation. Discuss what you learned with a friend.

  • Research the demographics of both the boards and the leadership for the largest arts organizations in your area. Share what you found with a friend.

  • Engage in a courageous conversation with a white friend or family member about any of the following - racial equity trainings, processing and checking white privilege, systemic racism, the need for greater equity in the arts etc.
