Money Stories: A Zine Workshop

We're aiming to keep the group on the smaller side to give folx space to talk and get to know one another (~8-10 people) Expect to have some short writing time, some conversation, some group art-making and a moment to make a commitment to move some $$.

For this workshop, we'll be primarily working in collage, drawing and writing. Expect that you'll make at least one printer paper sized page (8.5" x 11") that's a visual representation of some piece of your money story. The goal is for these to be scanned into a collective zine that can be shared!

Masks will be available and there will be some snacks, but please feel free to BYO dinner

A zine can be whatever you want them to be!

Historically, zines are usually DIY way to share information visually or with words; often they're made on a single piece of paper or multiple pieces of paper to be easily printed/photocopied and distributed quickly and inexpensively in small, limited batches. Typically they're distributed for free, sometimes they're sold or traded for other zines. Sometimes they look like little books, some look like slightly larger books, sometimes they look like piles of paper, some are works of art, sometimes they're made by one person, sometimes more than person, sometimes they're made by groups.

For this workshop, we'll be primarily working in collage, drawing and writing. Expect that you'll make at least one half-page that's a visual representation of some piece of your money story. The goal is for these to be scanned into a collective zine that can be shared!

A money story is your personal story of money, wealth, land and class over your life. Your story can include both facts and emotions and is great to include specific numbers to contextualize your story. Your money story can intertwine with others, but it is YOUR story.

Some questions to get you started:

-Do you have debt?

-Do you own land? Do you own a home?

-What is your current salary?

-How much do you have in savings?

-Do you go on vacations?

Honestly I don't know you so it's hard to say--except for that if you're wondering if you do, my experience is that you're more likely to have wealth and/or class privilege if you're questioning 🙃 So, maybe?

Resource Generation has a great Class Privilege Quiz that's worth taking to help think things through if you're trying to figure things out

I use this definition of class distinction and income brackets to define class and think it's a great definition to work from

We'll have some time to collectively each move an amount of money to our community. We will offer some suggestions and guidance around how to frame your choice of who to move $ to, but are not fundraising for a particular organization or group.

You do not need to bring a checkbook or credit card, but be prepared to make a commitment at the workshop to an amount of money that you'll be moving. We'll be following up with you afterwards to assist with any questions and to check in about your commitment. We're excited to see how much we can move together!
